Flashback Friday: Summer Edition!

This series is going to be my mixture of Favorite Books, and Throwback Thursday! I was going to do Favorite Fridays, but I want to be able to do a mixture of recent and not recent things. So here we are!

The first Flashback Friday is going to be Favorite Book Read this Summer!

Over the course of this summer (June – August) I read 30 books! I’m not including the two I started and haven’t finished or Dnf’d.

15 were manga

7 were fantasy (2 being YA and 5 being adult)

3 were horror/thriller

2 were literary fiction novels

1 was a DNF

1 was a romance

1 was a book told in verse.

I’m not surprised this list is skewed so heavily toward manga, because I read the enitre Tokyo Ghoul series in the month of July. This breakdown also made me realize that I cant’ just pick one, so I’m going to pick 3. My favorite manga, horror, and overall favorite book of the season.

Tokyo Ghoul, Vol. 13 (13): Ishida, Sui: 9781421590424: Amazon.com: Books

My favorite manga was Tokyo Ghoul vol. 13. I loved this particular volume so much. I didn’t want it to end, and so much happened. I can’t say too much because of *spoilers* but you can check out my review of the series to see my thoughts!

The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones

My favorite horror book was The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones. It thought it was the perfect amount of weird, and some of the scenes I was not expecting at all. It was so good!

And my overall favorite book of the season was…

Amazon.com: Ninth House (Alex Stern) (9781250313072): Bardugo, Leigh: Books

Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo!!!!!

I was going back and forth between it being this or Burn by Patrick Ness since I technically ranked this one higher by half a star. But I catch myself thinking back to Ninth House, and wanting to reread it again already. I think this is my favorite, because it managed to take topics that I don’t really like, and make me love them. I honestly am not the biggest dark academia or ghost fan, but I loved both of these in the book. I also keep checking to see if there are any updates of the sequel.

It was so good, and I know it’s a very polarizing book, but I’m so glad that I loved it. It marks the first book I loved from Bardugo, and it mixed dark fantasy with mystery for *chef’s kiss* a beautiful book. I think I’m going to read it again in October to get the full force of the spooky vibes, and because I loved it enough to read it multiple times in a year.

Those were my favorite 3 books from the summer. What about you? What did you read during the season, and what was your favorite book you read?

  1. I agree, Ninth House is awesome! 😊 I can’t wait for the sequel since I need to know more about what happened to Darlington!!
I’m honestly not sure what my favorite book of this summer was – maybe The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes? I think I might be the only person in the world who thinks so, though – everyone else seems to hate it 😅

    1. I agree! I’m dying for some type of new on the sequel lol. As for A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes I think I should read it since I wasn’t the BIGGEST fan of the original trilogy 😂

    1. I know a lot of people seemed to not like it, but I thought it was absolutely amazing lol! I thought it mixed the dark elements of fantasy in an urban school setting very well, but the plot is a little slow.
