10 Books I’m Embarrassed I Haven’t Read

I like to think I’m a diverse reader. Sure I like to stay in my comfortable bubble of fantasy, but sometimes I like to take an epic adventure and try something new. But that being said, I’m here to *expose* myself, and talk about some books I’m embarrassed I haven’t read.

Amazon.com: The Dragon Republic (The Poppy War Book 2) eBook: Kuang, R. F.: Kindle Store

10. The Dragon Republic by R. F. Kuang

It probably isn’t fair to include this, because I’m just embarrassed I bought the book IMMEDIATELY after finishing The Poppy War, but I am neglecting this beauty. Sometimes in the middle of the night, I hear its halfhearted cries for attention.

The Lies of Locke Lamora (Gentleman Bastards): Lynch, Scott: Amazon.com: Books

9. The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch

Heists are my JAM! So tell me why I have ignored this book? Looking for an answer other than because it’s a mass-market paperback!

Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

8. Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

A gothic horror, that I’ve heard nothing but amazing things, that I just HAD to have, but is now screaming for my attention as I let it collect dust on my shelf.

Dracula: Stoker, Bram: 9781503261389: Amazon.com: Books

7. Dracula by Bram Stoker

This one is purely because I love horror, and it’s said to have been the beginning of horror. Not to mention I’m on another vampire kick, but have still yet to make an effort to read this. It’s pitiful really.

The Blade Itself (The First Law Trilogy (1)): Abercrombie, Joe: 9780316387316: Amazon.com: Books

6. The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie

They call him the king of grimdark, and I love all things fantasy and dark. So it seems like it’d be an obvious choice. So I’m again searching for answers on why I haven’t read this yet.

The Way Of Kings - (Stormlight Archive) By Brandon Sanderson (Paperback) : Target

5. The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson

I am once again asking for your answers on why this series has been ignored. I told myself right after the SECOND book came out that I was going to start it. The FOURTH book is coming out so soon!

Pet Sematary - Wikipedia

4. Pet Sematary by Stephen King

This one I’m chalking up to I’m nervous. King has been such a hit or miss for me, that I’m scared I’m going to read yet another lackluster horror book. But I’ve only seen people scream how much they love this one.

A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara, Paperback | Barnes & Noble®

3. A Little Life by Hanya Yanigahara

You want to know what the dustiest, oldest, most neglected book on my shelf is? Here you go! I’ve had this bad boy since 2016, and haven’t even touched it. Am I scared of the length? The sadness? Being ripped apart? All of the above? Yes.

Amazon.com: Invisible Monsters: A Novel (9780393355956): Palahniuk, Chuck: Books

2. Invisible Monsters by Chuck Palahniuk

To date I have read 6 of his books. Not even his most popular, but somehow I managed to not read his second most popular book. I’m honestly so embarrassed of this one I didn’t want to include it on this post.

The Fellowship of the Ring: Being the First Part of The Lord of the Rings (1): Tolkien, J.R.R.: 9780547928210: Amazon.com: Books

1 The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien

I said I was here to expose myself so here I am! Yeah you read that right. I, Nicole, have never read (or seen) any of the Lord of the Rings. I feel like a fake fantasy fan. I’ve never even touched any of the books. Excuse me while I hide my shame…

That actually felt nice to get it all off my chest. Feel free to shame me even more, I can take it! Are there any books you guys haven’t read that you’re embarrassed by?

  1. I have had The Dragon Republic lying around for months now, so you’re definitely not alone there! 😅 I do plan on (finally) reading it in October, though, when my exams are over… So fingers crossed I will actually do that!

    1. I know it’s going to be good I’m just so scared of getting hurt lol 😂. I can’t wait to read it and to hear your thoughts on it!

  2. It’s okay, I’ve not read a lot of those either! I bought The Dragon Republic recently…because the ebook was £1…but I’ve not actually read The Poppy Wars yet. Probably should get to that! I have read Lord of the Rings though so that’s something (I’ve got entire shelves just dedicated to Tolkien) and The Lies of Locke Lamora is one of my favourite books. I’ve not read the rest of the Gentleman Bastards series though so hoping those are just as good.

    1. That makes me feel better! That’s such a steal for The Dragon Republic, I support that wholeheartedly. I definitely want to reach Locke Lamora ASAP, but I’m so scared I’m not going to like Tolkien and people are gonna come for me lol

      1. Have a post going up later this week about me book buying but it yeah, sums up as I really can’t resist books that cost £1!
I do love Tolkien, first started reading LotR when I was about 10 or 11, but I get that LotR now isn’t going to be for everyone because older fantasy like that is quite different to modern fantasy if that’s what you usually read. Worth giving a go reading it though, even just to get an understanding of the text that’s inspired so much western fantasy that exists.
But definitely read Locke Lamora! Have you read Name of the Wind? If you have and liked that style, you’ll probably like Locke Lamora.

  3. I’m not sure if I’m embarrassed by it, but I still haven’t read or watched Crazy Rich Asians. I know it’s a big deal, and I’m happy that it led to one of the few Hollywood movies with more than token Asian representation that is NOT a martial arts flick, but…I’m just not that into crazy rich anything. 🙁

I also still haven’t read Terminal Alliance. I want to. Space janitors save the world sounds awesome.

    1. I haven’t read Crazy Rich Asians if that makes you feel better 😂 something about it just didn’t scream at me to pick it up. Also I’ve never heard of Terminal Alliance, but hearing space janitors has me interested!

  4. I loved The Lies of Locke Lamora but it has an incredibly long set up 200 pages before it really gets going, I have the two sequels on my shelf but I’m really struggling to force myself through another inevitable 200 pages of description and set up before it actually starts. I haven’t read the Lord of the Rings either, the length is off-putting, and I can’t get into Tolkien’s writing, though I loved the Hobbit when I was a child.

    1. Oh wow thank you so much for that warning! Slow starts are always hard for me lol. And yeah same Tolkien’s writing is just so hard

  5. I have had Lies of Locke Lamora sitting on my bookshelf for almost 5 years now. I started reading it and got about 100 pages and although I really liked it it was realllly slow so I struggled with it. I’m hoping to get to it soon. It’s on my TBR for this year so fingers crossed I finally read it! Also really want to read The Way of Kings eventually since I loved Mistborn. – Amber

    1. I’ve heard a couple people start Locke Lamora and quit, then try it again and have a completely different experience lol. The Way of Kings is just so intimidated that I’m scared I’ll put it down and forget it.

Also I can’t find the comment where you asked about being innterthought.wordpress.com, but that’s weird that it didn’t switch over. I’ll look into it! I changed it to nicolesbookthoughts.wordpress.com the innerthoughts was when it was a school blog lol

      1. Yeah I’m hoping I’ll like it a lot more this time. It’s one of those books that I just know I’m going to probably end up loving, I just got to get to it. And agreed! The size scares me too. One of these days I have to just sit down and plow through it.

And haha okay! Yeah, when I was clicking on your name through the comments that’s where it was taking me. I ended up finding this blog just through the reader! – Amber
